In part 1 of our 2018 Montana late season elk hunt, Randy Newberg and his cameraman Michael Parente are on their way to the Bozeman airport to pick up Karrson Koivisto and Shawn Ell of Gerber Gear. It's a quick two and a half hour drive to their camp where Beau Baty of Wilderness Ridge Trail Llamas is anxiously awaiting Randy and Crew.

The guys settle into camp and share a meal of steamed vegetables, baked potatoes and elk tenderloin from Beau's Montana bull he shot a week prior. After dinner, the guys make a plan for the morning and head to bed.

The following morning, the crew wakes up well before sunrise eager to get on the mountain and find big hank.

The spot they are heading to is a rugged steep face that overlooks a good transition area. It's the second week of Montana's general rifle season and probably the most difficult time to find a bull elk on public land. The bulls are up high, and with the mild weather Montana has had this year the elk haven't been forced to move down quite yet. So the idea for this hunt is to get up high and glass transition areas where the elk are moving from their summer range to winter range.

If you want more information on transition areas and staging areas, check this video out: https://bit.ly/2QZGNxV

The crew glasses all day long and have no luck locating any elk. The only critters that they see are mule deer and a mountain goat. Just as shooting light fades, a winter storm blows in and the guys decide to head down the mountain.

Once back at camp Beau prepares lasagna made with ground elk meat and a nice tray of hors-d'oeuvres.
