The 2024 Volvo XC40 Recharge
The 2024 Volvo XC40 Recharge aims to electrify the Swedish automaker's popular subcompact luxury crossover. Offered in single- and dual-motor configurations, the Recharge promises up to 293 miles of EPA-estimated driving range from its 79 kWh battery pack. Prices start around $50,000 before options.
On the outside, the Recharge follows the gas-powered XC40's chic design theme with its chunky silhouette and Thor's hammer LED headlights. New wheel designs and subtle blue accents signal its electrified powertrain within. The interior carries over mostly unchanged, with Scandinavian-inspired design and clever storage solutions throughout the cabin.
Powering the base Recharge is a single permanent-magnet AC electric motor mounted over the rear axle, producing 248 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of instant torque. A Twin Motor model adds a front-mounted 147 hp induction motor for a combined output of 402 hp and all-wheel drive capability. This allows the AWD Recharge to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.3 seconds in testing. Ride quality is compliant and handling secure, if not quite as nimble as key rivals.
All Recharges use an advanced new infotainment system co-developed with Google's Android Automotive. The intuitive interface offers natural voice commands, over-the-air update capability, and deep smartphone integration. Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, an available 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and standard active safety tech like automated emergency braking round out the high-tech features.
The base Single Motor Recharge promises 293 miles per charge according to the EPA, thanks to clever weight-saving strategies and its heat-pump climate control system. Go for the heavier, more powerful Twin Motor model and range shrinks to 254 miles. Both can recharge from 10 to 80 percent capacity in as little as 32 minutes from DC fast chargers. Home charging replenishes 32 miles per hour on 240-volt Level 2 sources.
Where the XC40 Recharge falters is its price tag. At over $50,000 to start, the Volvo finds itself pricier than competitors like the ID.4 and Ioniq 5 which offer similar driving range and interior space for thousands less. However, buyers seeking premium appointments along with their EV motoring will find good value in the Recharge over rivals from BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Audi.
