How To Stop A Dog From Barking | Why Do Dogs Bark

Barking is a noisy but completely normal part of dog communication. But if your pooch is barking very frequently or for long periods, this isn’t only annoying for you (and your neighbours) – it could also be a sign of deeper issues your dog is experiencing. To help prevent your dog from barking, it's important to know why they are doing it.

So, here are different reasons Why do dogs bark?

Dogs bark for lots of reasons. They might be excited, bored, frustrated, distressed about being left alone or even worried and they may bark at different times for different reasons. For example, if your dog hasn’t had enough exercise, or doesn’t feel stimulated they may bark to signal that they are bored, or frustrated. Physical stimulation is very important, so you could try increasing your dog’s exercise, making their daily walks more fun or spending more time playing with them in the house or garden.

4 important tips to stop your dog from barking

(1) Ignore the barking

If you believe your dog is barking simply to get your attention, try to ignore them. If your dog barks at mealtimes, ignore the barking and wait for them to stop before feeding them. Plan and distract them by giving them a toy when you know you’ll be preparing them a snack. If your dog barks to get you to play with them, ignore them. Turn away from your dog or even leave the room and do something else instead. When they are quiet, pick up a toy and invite them to play – a fun game is an excellent reward for being quiet.

(2) Keep your dog tired

Make sure your dog is getting sufficient physical and mental exercise every day. A tired dog is a dog who is less likely to bark from boredom or frustration. Depending on its, age and health, your dog may require several long walks as well as a good game of chasing the ball and playing with some interactive toys.

(3) Avoid things that your dog finds scary

If your dog is barking because they are scared, try to avoid the scary thing as much as possible. For example, if your dog barks at passers-by through a window, cover this up to block their view. If they bark because they are scared of being alone, try to avoid leaving them as much as possible. Consider using a pet sitter or dog walker.

(4) Desensitize your dog to the stimulus

If your dog barks at specific triggers, gradually get your dog accustomed to whatever is causing them to bark. Start with the stimulus (the thing that makes them bark) at a distance. It must be far enough away that they don't bark when they see it. Feed them lots of good treats for maintaining eye contact with you and not barking. Move the stimulus a little closer (perhaps as little as a few inches or a few feet to start) and feed treats. Doing this consistently will teach them that quietly ignoring something, rather than barking, has a good outcome.
