I'm Dr. Mark McOmie of McOmie Family Dentistry. And oftentimes I'm asked about bone grafting. If I get tooth pulled out, do I need to have a bone graft? That's a very common question. That's a great question. And the answer is sometimes you do, and sometimes maybe you don't.

Bone grafting helps us preserve the ridge. What that means is the tooth is in the bone. And when we take that out, there is a void here. A bone graft goes in and fills that void up. It provides a matrix for the bone to grow across. And so it keeps the bone high and it keeps the door open for us to do things like dental implants down the road. Maybe it preserves the ridge for a denture. Maybe it preserves the ridge so that a tooth that's in front of the extraction site doesn't get bone loss down the back root of it. And so bone grafts are great. They are very, very predictable. We do them all the time, and they work and they preserve that ridge.

I recommend bone grafts frequently for people with dental extractions. How to know if it's right for you is to come in on a free consult. We can look at what you've got going on, and we can help you. Sometimes you need bone grafting just to put in dental implants. You may not have enough bone in the area. You need the dental implant. Sinus lists can be done, and bone can be placed in there. And then you can get dental implant after the bone graft. Great question.
