(16 Apr 2009) HEADLINE:  Obama pledges help to slow US arms flow
CAPTION: Speaking in Mexico, President Barack Obama signaled Thursday he will not seek renewal of a U.S. assault weapons ban but instead will step up enforcement of laws banning the transfer of such guns across the border. (April 16)

[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]
  ((Arrival ceremony, Obama with Calderon))
Barack Obama's first visit South of the Border as president was a visible vote of confidence in Mexico's embattled leader, President Felipe Calderon, in HIS desperate struggle with Mexican drug lords.
  ((File footage))
It's been a brutal fight -- with more than 10,000 dead in two years, as the cartels battle each other and Mexico's outgunned police.
((To talks fotoop, then newser walkout))
After talks at Calderon's official residence, Obama praised what he called Mexico's "heroic" fight against the narco-kingpins.
OBAMA SOT: (9:50 from start) "That are fueling kidnappings and sowing chaos in our communities and robbing so many of a future both here in Mexico and in the United States."
STANDUP BRIDGE: But the president's message here in Mexico is that there's work to be done NORTH of
the border, too -- halting the flow of cash and guns to the cartels and curbing America's insatiable
appetite for drugs.
((Maybe cover tail end of Obama SOT with file of cartel guns))
OBAMA SOT: (10:40 from start) A demand for drugs in the United States is what is helping to keep these cartels in business. This war is being waged with guns purchased not here but in the United States.
  ((To Calderon))
Which led Calderon to say he's love to see the Clinton-era ban on assault weapons reinstated.
  ((Back to Obama))
That's something Obama pledged to seek as a candidate. But now Congress is pushing back.
OBAMA: (15:12 from start) None of us are under any illusion that reinstating that ban would be easy.
  ((To border file footage))
So for now, Obama's focused on deploying more agents and surveillance gear along the border.
((Back to Calderon, then he and Obama walk off))
Meantime, Calderon tells reporters the drug killings have been spectacular -- but the crime rate in border cities is still lower than in some American locales.
