What happens is if you have some upper respiratory infections or allergies is there is congestion inside the nose. So when you are lying down, there will be an increase in the venous flow into the nose and the turbinates. This increases thee already congested nose and we can have nasal blockage. Usually when you turn to the right or the left when you are sleeping, you will find that, one of the nose clears up. That is because the fluid shift occurs from the superior part to the dependent part of the nasal cavity. So if you are sleeping in the right, the right nasal cavity can get congested and if you are turning to the left, vice versa. So this condition is the shift in the venous flow and the water retention, which causes the nasal blockage to worsen when you are lying down especially at night.
