This #INNengine
This #INNengine engine is inspired by opposing piston engines, a design that dates back to 1882 and was presented by James Atkinson, the same that gives its name to the Atkinson duty cycle with two pistons working facing each other inside the same cylinder. This design has been on the table of different laboratories and engineering firms for many years due to its possibilities in terms of performance, efficiency and fewer moving parts, however no one has managed to bring these types of motors to a large-scale commercial application. Its application throughout history has been specific, being used for military vehicles, marine and aeronautical applications, trains, etc. However, the idea has continued to evolve, finding its most modern and optimized version in the design of Achates Power.
The opposed piston motor manages to reduce masses and final size of the impeller. The key to achieving this reduction in weight and size is to eliminate the traditional design of pistons connected to a crankshaft, creating a rotating cam where the connecting rods rest, and having a permanent contact track where the axial movement of the pistons is finally transformed in circular motion on a single output shaft. To put it mildly, the real apparent innovation of the INNengine engine has been to further simplify the opposing piston engine.
The INNengine propeller consists of 8 4-cylinder facing pistons, promising that with a 500cc displacement, this propeller is capable of delivering the performance of a conventional 2-liter engine. At the moment INNengine has not communicated official consumption, power or torque data.
