They are called "blood antiquities". They have recently come to light: works of art looted from war zones in the Near and Middle East and then sold to wealthy collectors and antique dealers in Europe. An illegal business of several hundred million euros which would be one of the main sources of financing for terrorist groups. For a year, Complément d'Enquête traced the trail of art traffickers, from the ancient cities of Libya to small clandestine dealers on Ebay and Parisian art galleries. How are statuettes, busts and precious jewels transported clandestinely? With what complicity? How much is this spoils of war worth? On Facebook, we have infiltrated discussion groups where looters and intermediaries exchange tips and tricks to thwart police checks. In Spain, we followed the hunt for a Barcelona antique dealer accused of financing terrorism. A first in Europe! Two investigators with the profile of Indiana Jones served as our guides in this global treasure hunt: Morgan Belzic and Vincent Michel, archaeologists and experts with the Central Office for the Fight against Trafficking in Cultural Property. How do they manage to identify a stolen work? How long will it take for “blood antiquities” to finally be banned from salerooms and exhibitions?
