Fifty-five years ago on August 6, 1965, the Voting Rights Act was passed into law. One of the most expansive pieces of civil rights legislation in the history of the United States, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 enacted protections against voter suppression by eliminating literacy tests, poll taxes and other obstacles to registration and voting.

We mark this anniversary today with a look at the Brandywine River Museum of Art’s current exhibition "Witness to History: Selma Photography of Stephen Somerstein," documenting the final day of the historic 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama—a turning point in the civil rights movement that led to the passage of the act.
