LIVE UPDATES: Hurricane Ian impacting Florida's southwest coast

Hurricane Ian has continued to strengthen and is bringing significant threats to areas of Tampa Bay and Florida's Gulf Coast that don't normally see such headlines, but they're worth acting upon: Life-threatening storm surge and catastrophic winds and flooding are expected, the National Hurricane Center said.

People living along and near the coast are urged to evacuate to safety.

As of the 5 a.m. advisory, Hurricane Ian has strengthened to an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm and was located about 75 miles southwest of Naples, Florida, with sustained winds of 140 mph. Ian's movement is north-northeast at 10 mph.  

In its 6 a.m. update, the National Hurricane Center said conditions were rapidly deteriorating along the southwest Florida coast as the storm nears closer.
