What is surrealism? (Modernism 3)

Surrealism is an early form of modernism that depicted not reality but our subconscious thoughts and feelings. Artists began trying to create art that was irrational and dreamlike. They called themselves surrealists. The prefix sur- means beyond, so surrealists were trying to depict things that were beyond reality.
