Tarikh is a daily Hindi programme in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons and Incidents. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Lt General Hanut Singh Rathore PVSM, MVC (6 July 1933 – 10 April 2015). He was decorated with the Maha Vir Chakra for his role in the Battle of Basantar in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

Lt General Hanut Singh was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1954 and was part of the 17th Poona Horse Regiment. He served in various operational roles throughout his career and was known for his bravery and leadership skills.

One of his most significant contributions was during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, where he was the commanding officer of the Poona Horse regiment. He led his troops in the famous Battle of Basantar, which was a critical battle that ultimately helped India achieve victory in the war.
