The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a public notice announcing changes to the eligibility criteria for the NEET-UG Test and admission to medical courses. The decision applies to students whose applications were previously rejected under the old regulations. The erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) regulations, which imposed specific requirements for the study of Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology in Class 11 and 12, were challenged and quashed by the Delhi High Court in 2018. The NMC, considering the New Education Policy and allowing flexibility in Class 12 subject choices, has framed the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023. As per the new regulations, candidates who have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English are eligible for NEET-UG. The notice also mentions that candidates can undertake the study of these subjects even as additional subjects after Class 12. This decision is applicable retrospectively, including for candidates whose applications were previously rejected. The NMC has withdrawn court cases related to this matter and aims for a swift resolution of pending litigations.
