The best-selling historical novel of Keiichiro Takashi, also known as screenwriter Ichiro Ikeda was remade into a drama. It was on TV Asahi from April 16 to July 2, 1998, for a total of 10 episodes. The original story, which uses a bold hypothesis to explore the mystery of Tokugawa Ieyasu, is portrayed well, and the next episode is eagerly awaited. The visuals are also spectacular, thanks in part to the direction of renowned film directors Eiichi Kudo, Ikuo Sekimoto, and Akinori Matsuo.
In Keicho 5 (1600), during the Battle of Sekigahara, Tokugawa Ieyasu (Takahashi Hideki) is assassinated by Kai no Rokuro (Kataoka Tsurutaro), an assassin released by Ishida Mitsunari. Jirozaburo Serata (Hideki Takahashi), who bears a striking resemblance to Ieyasu from face to body and has served as Ieyasu's scapegoat for the past ten years, takes over for Ieyasu and leads the battle to victory. Tokugawa Hidetada (Ichikawa Ukon), fearing the upheaval caused by Ieyasu's death, ordered Jirozaburo to continue his cover until the day the Toyotomi clan was destroyed. Five years pass, but Jirozaburo refuses to give up his position as successor, and Hidetada, growing anxious and impatient, orders Yagyu Munenori (Hagiwara Nagare) to plot his assassination.
