Everything you need to know about the CSLB (Contractors State License Board) in 3 minutes!
The CSLB stands for the Contractors State License Board. The CSLB is the governing agency for construction contractors in the state of California. They protect the public from unlicensed and bonded contractors, decide who can get a CSLB license, administer examinations and even govern home improvement salesman.
There are CSLB locations all over the state including:
Sacramento
Fresno
San Francisco
Norwalk
San Bernardino
San Diego
Valencia
West Covina
To get a CSLB you must meet the basic requirements for California contractors:
18 Years of age
Drivers license or USA ID
Social Security or ITIN#
Not currently on probation or parole
Pass an exam
There are 73 classifications offered in California.
General A – Engineering
General B - General Building
C-Specialty
D-Specialty (C-61)

California takes construction very seriously. Everyone from painters, landscapers and glazers to engineers and electricians must hold contractor licenses. You must demonstrate 4 years of journeyman level experience and pass a two part exam.
The exam you take depends on the trade in which you are applying, but all applicants must also pass the CSLB law and business exam.
The contractor license law test covers a variety of different construction project management related topics. Including CAL OSHA and EPA standards. Mechanics liens, contracts, accounting, financial management and much more. First established in 1929 as the Contractor License Bureau, the agency began to develop vocational and construction standards in the state of California.
The leadership of the CSLB is made up of a 15-member board that appoints an executive officer. The board is also responsible for directing administrative policy for the agency’s operations.
