The ML-1 (Main Line -1)
The ML-1 (Main Line -1) Project is intended to rehabilitate and improve the existing ML-1 railway connecting Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar. Upgrades will double the existing rail track from Karachi to Peshawar as part of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.The Main line 1 serves as the main passenger and freight line of the country. 75% of the country's cargo and passenger traffic uses the line. The Main line -1 is currently undergoing a six-year 6.8 billion dollars upgrade and renovation as part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, with average rail speeds expected be doubled to 160 kilometres per hour upon completion.
Pakistan would get massive economic benefits in the form of 150,000 jobs and a significant surge in the freight business after completion of the ML-1 project.
He added that 90% of those jobs would be given to Pakistanis while the remaining 10% would be taken up by Chinese nationals.
key Features of ML-1 projects are :
160 kmh speed for passenger trains and 120 kmh speed for freight trains,
Safety fencing at the both side of the track,
All the leveled crossings will be removed and underpasses and overhead bridges will be available for road transport,
All major Railway stations will be upgraded,
Pakistan Railways academy Walton Lahore and Havailian dry port will be upgraded.
ML 1 Project will create 190,000 Jobs and Rs 50 Billion benefits.
