Good Morning everyone!

My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian.  Today I am talking about patellar luxation in the dog.  Luxating patella in the dog is very common in small dogs.  A luxating patella is when the kneecap moves out of its normal position.  The patella or the kneecap usually slides inward on the leg, but it can also slid to the outside or lateral part of the knee.

Luxating patella in the dog can be painful and cause inflammation.  As a veterinarian I see more patellar luxation in small dogs compared to large dogs.  Patellar luxation can be mild causing a little bit of lameness or more severe causing significant lameness or not using the leg.

The way veterinarian will diagnose a luxated patella is with a physical exam and x-ray or radiograph.  During the physical exam the veterinarian may be able to feel or palpated the luxated patella.  The veterinarian may need to take an x-ray to confirm that patellar luxation.

A veterinarian can manage a dog with patellar luxation with a dog anti-inflammatory or they may recommended surgery depending how serious the kneecap problem is.
