Why is Mises stress that expression? In this video, I gave a big picture of Mises stress.
I’m going to go to give you the reason why Mises stress is that math expression in my next video.
A stress tensor expresses everything about what kind of forces are applied on the material. Therefore, whether the material will yield or not should depend on the stress tensor. Moreover, you can easily imagine that whether the material will yield or not shouldn’t depend on coordinate systems.
If there were only one function that doesn’t depend on coordinate systems, the function would be the function that can evaluate whether the material will yield or not. However, unfortunately, there are some functions that don’t depend on coordinate systems.
Therefore, Mr. Mises added two conditions by considering mechanics of materials to a function that doesn’t depend on coordinate systems in order to invent a function that can evaluate whether the material will yield or not. The function is von Mises stress. However, how can we use it? This video has the answer.
