I used to believe that milled restorations were more about convenience and profitability. I was convinced that pressed would always be superior in regards to anatomy, detail, and precision. This was my experience until I realized that CAD/CAM is a tool, a technology that produces results that are only as good as what goes into it. The training, experience, and commitment to maximizing the potential of CAD/CAM restorations is limited, but the potential is great.

Over the past two years, my experience with milled posterior restorations has redefined my opinion dramatically. At first, my mill was a fun technology, but we were still not surpassing the detail and anatomy I was used to seeing. Over time, we refined our technique, optimized settings, and workflow. The result: These restorations rival or surpass those of any lab-made restoration I've received in my career.

One of my patients paid $2000 per tooth for the lab bill from a top technician and we had to eventually replace it; she says the restoration we milled is the nicest of them all - and she is not wrong! That's music to my ears, and I'm thrilled with what we can achieve. 🎉

In this journey, I have seen many benefits of CAD/CAM dentistry come to light:
1️⃣ Marginal precision is the best I have ever seen.
2️⃣ Occlusal adjustment has been reduced by 90%, sometimes eliminated entirely.
3️⃣ The process saves us a lot of time and creates new opportunities. ⏱️
4️⃣ It has elevated the precision of more complex cases where occlusion and vertical dimension are altered.
