What's the difference and how do you do them?

Stitch names can often be confusing and the buttonhole and blanket stitches are no exception.  Are they the same, or are they different?  As a historical costumer it is important to know when and where to use certain stitches as well as how to do them.  So, I dug into my books and found out the differences, uses, and even how to do the buttonhole stitch and the blanket stitches.
