Desire paths, (aka goat tracks or desire lines), are incidental paths made by the feet of people, contrary to the actual paths that were designed and built for them.
In this explainer video I touch upon the unnoticed wisdom of crowds that comes with desire paths, and what we can learn from it on ourselves as human beings.

In a first glance, desire paths seem like path of least resistance, or simple wayfinding. If you search desire paths, desire lines or goat tracks online, it is mostly discussed in terms of architecture, urban planning and urban design. But desire paths show of something much deeper in us as human beings. Not only in terms of anthropology and wisdom of the crowds, but also in a more personal sense. And there is not way to touch upon the inner layers of a person than through art and contemporary art. Using photos of Dutch photographer Jan Dirk van der Burg, from his photo album “olifantenpaadjes” (elephant paths), I am attempting to distill the inner, deeper meaning of desire paths.

Thank you Aura Girl, for the inspiration to share this.
