A low-budget option of recording
A low-budget option of recording onboard motorcycle sound is to work with the ZOOM H1(n) – or any other good audiorecorder. I fell in love with the ZOOM H1n, it’s easy to handle and gives great results. Synchronizing the audio file with the GoPro-Video is easy if you just sound the horn in some moment and search afterwards for the sound wave. A lot of people put their audiorecorder into a backpack. I tried this out and wasn’t really happy with the results. I think the backpack is too far away from your motorcycle pipe, so the recorded sound is really dull and… weird…
I’ve tried out the audiorecording with 2 methods, speaking from 2 different mounting positions.
METHOD 1: bad handling, but better results.
METHOD 2: easy to handle, good, but some clipping and not 100% satisfactory results.
✘ setup: be sure that there is no much room between your audiorecorder and the bag you put it in. If you use a bigger bag, put more foam material around your recorder. It should not move a lot while driving. It also should be so thick that it protects the recorder from wind noise, but not too thick that it absorbs all the (good) „sound“.
method 1: use a bag you can attach to your motorcycle with cable ties or similar.
method 2: see below what I use.
✘ settings: never set your audiorecorder to autolevel (your audio will tune up and down constantly). Find the perfect level for audio recording (affecting factors: pipe volume; distance pipe and audiorecorder; wind noise; bag). If you providing clipping set the sound-level too low you will nevertheless not have good results in post production. If your audiorecorder has low-cut // limiter function, use it. 48/24 BIT is perfect. At the beginning you should try out a few different levels: e.g. 20, 15, 10, 5.
