Strong alkalis are alkaline chemical compounds capable of deprotonating very weak acids in an acid-alkali reaction. Compounds with an acid dissociation constant greater than 13 are called strong alkalis. Common examples of strong alkalis are alkali metal hydroxides and alkaline earth metals such as NaOH and Ca(OH)2. Very strong alkalis can deprotonate very weak acidic (C-H) functional groups even without the presence of water.
