(18 Sep 1976) Sirens wailed for three minutes and people in the countryside stood at attention at the start of a 30-minute funeral service for Chairman Mao Tse tung. Mao died on september 9th at the age of 82.
One million people gathered in Tien An Men (the gate of heavenly peace) Square. Wang Hung-Wen, a vice chairman of the Chinese Communist Party presided over the memorial service for the dead leader. Premier Hua Kuo-Feng, now the ranking party leader as First Vice Chairman, delivered the eulogy to Mao. Hua called upon the Chinese people to: "unite and don't split, be open and above board and don't intrigue and conspire."
