*Disclaimer*
everything that is done to the outer layer of the jacket must be done to the lining as well. If you take in the back seam 3 cm, match this alterations onto the lining.

Step 1 - remove the shoulder padding, if there is any on your suit jacket. access the padding by opening up the lining of the armhole.

Step 2 - remove the sleeves with a seam ripper

Step 3 - flip the sleeves inside out so you can access the inner seam. pin the 2 seams of the sleeves. this is a preference choice of how much slimmer you would like the sleeves to be. it can be helpful to write down the measurements of how much you're taking in the sleeves so you know what type of alterations to make to the lining as well as the body of the jacket.

Step 4 - now take in the body of the jacket by pinning the seams. again, this is a preference of how much you would like to take the jacket in. it is important to keep these lines smooth and avoid any points. if you sew hard cornered seams the result will be points in your garment.

Step 5 - sew with a straight stitch along the lines of the pins (the two seams of the sleeve, the two seams of the body of the jacket, and the shoulder of the jacket). make sure to also sew a basting stitch along the top of the sleeve (basting stitch is the biggest stitch your machine can do and make sure not to back stitch this stitch). tug the thread of your basted stitch to create the gathering at the top of the sleeve.

Step 6 - mark a new shoulder line for your jacket's armhole. pin on your sleeve to test the fit of the new alterations.

Step 7 - if you are happy with the fit, trim away the excess fabric. smooth out and align the fabric on the sleeve and cut away any excess on the seams.

Step 8 - pinning right sides together, reattach the sleeve to the body of the jacket.

Step 9 - flip your jacket inside out so that you are able to access the back seam. place pins to determine how much you would like the take in this seam. try it on at this stage. once you are happy with the fit, sew where you placed the pins and trim away excess.

Step 10 - attach the lining of the sleeve back onto the lining of the body of the garment. the first sleeve can be done by machine; however, for the second seam you will need to finish the closure of the lining with a hand stitch (in order to flip the jacket right side out you need a break in the lining and this is the area that will need to be hand stitched from the outside)

Step 11 - trim away excess threads, iron, steam your jacket, and you're done !
