If you are planning to buy a mid-size SUV like the Creta, Seltos, GV, Taigun, or even the initial variants of the XUV700 and EVs like the MG ZS EV, please wait until August 7th to see what Tata has to offer with the Curvv.
The Curvv is expected to be launched in both EV and ICE variants. Tata is aggressively marketing its coupe design, and the car seems to have a length of 4.2 or 4.3 meters. In the latest teaser video, Martin discusses the thought process behind the design. It’s a bold experiment because there is currently no coupe SUV from any mass-selling passenger brand, but almost all Tata products have enjoyed good success in the last 5-6 years.
The EV is expected to be launched first, competing with the Nexon, ZS EV, and 400. I speculate it will have a battery pack of 40 kWh & 60 kWh, with a range of 430 km & 500 km, and priced between 16-22 lakh. The car looks like an EV in the teaser videos, based on the alloy design.
Tata is marketing the Curvv as a rough and tough vehicle, as seen in the teasers with the tagline 'shaped for extreme performance.' The car is shown in extreme conditions, such as Jaisalmer with 50-degree temperatures and Leh with -20-degree temperatures. It is also shown undergoing water wading tests and rugged road tests with potholes and bad roads.
For the ICE variant, it will be interesting to see if it gets the 1.5 or 2.0 Diesel engine and what kind of automatic transmission will be offered. For petrol, will it get the Nexon’s 1.2 turbo or something else with a DCA, or perhaps something bigger and new? It will be intriguing to see how it fits into the segment because, if it's above 4 meters, it is expected to bridge the gap between the Nexon and Harrier.
Initially, Tata will likely price it very aggressively to capitalize on the festive season and early excitement if both EV and ICE are launched together. The ICE variant will be 20-30% cheaper than the EV, similar to other mid-size SUVs.
The suspension in the videos appears to be a torsion beam at the rear. The EV is expected to get 4 disc brakes, and 6 airbags will surely be standard in both ICE and EV variants, just like the Nexon and Harrier. The car is expected to share infotainment parts with other Tata cars and might get the same 7 and 10.25-inch units from Harman Kardon, with speakers from JBL.
Details about a sunroof, which is popular among Indian buyers, and ADAS in the top variants are still uncertain. The marketing focuses on the design and the rough and tough character of the car, which is said to be suitable for all kinds of driving conditions in India, with a good size, unique style, safety, and practicality on offer.
