Sony ZV-1 II ZV1 M2 4K Cinematic
Its been 3 years, the ZV-1 Mark II is finally here. Yes, I know you guys might be wondering, no 4K 60p, no 10Bit Color, and no IBIS, So why buying the ZV-1 II?? The simple answer is the 18mm wide angle lens.

I have always been dreaming for a super wide angle compact camera since the RX100 IV. Its been almost 10 years. We never had something wider than 24mm.  As I do a lot of travelling. Shooting in the hotel room, landscape and buildings. 24mm just isn’t wide enough. Plus 24mm is just what Sony says. If you do the math yourself. It’s actually a 25.8mm lens. So I often have to carry another APS-C camera with a 11mm lens when I go travel. Which is a bit annoying sometimes. As I go travel, I just wanna carry a small camera.

Even though this camera has no 10Bit Color. No 4K 60p. But when I travel I don’t need heavy Color grading or slowing down my footage. For me, I just want something better than a smartphone or a GoPro. Yes, the lens is f/4 when it gets to 50mm. But if I just leave it at 18mm. Then I don‘t have to worry at all. GoPro doesn’t zoom anyway (Not the digital zoom). I know I shouldn‘t be comparing them as they got the different price tag. The GoPro Hero 11 is USD$499 and the ZV-1 II is USD$899. But with that extra USD$400. You get better and bigger sensor. Much nicer photo quality and also way better lowlight performance. But don’t get me wrong, even though I said I don’t need 10Bit and 4K 60p for such a tiny camera. But it would be nice to have it.

The biggest down side of this ZV-1 II would be the non stabilization lens. Because nowadays GoPros and smartphones they all have such an amazing stabilization. Even though GoPro and iPhone also using the E-IS and they are cropping in the image too. But their cameras are 13mm and 14mm wide. So after the heavy digital crop. It is still acceptable. But when you switch on the E-IS on the ZV-1 II. It crops into 22mm. So you aren’t getting the 18mm field of view anymore.

Also the ND isn’t strong enough during the day. Especially the HLG picture profile is minimum ISO200. Unlike their full frame cameras, A7SIII HLG minimum ISO is ISO100 and A7IV is ISO125. You gain double for the ISO and that is huge. So when I was doing the review, even on f/5.6 + ND turned on. It was still too bright. And that was in a cloudy day too. So I ended up stopping down to f/8. I don’t expect Sony to give us a build in 6 stops ND. But why didn’t they just give us a filter thread like the ZV-1F. It would make so much sense.

Over all, I think this is a really great holiday camera. The 4K image is beautiful. Even though it has some sort of digital sharpness . But the over all image still looks nice. Mind you, please don’t use the “Clean Image Zoom” on this camera. It is nothing like the Sony full frame camera. It looks so bad.

Pros and Cons (Personal Opinion)
Pros
18mm lens
Super compact, and fits into your pocket

Cons
No lens IS, you always have to switch on the E.I.S then it becomes 22mm
No 4K 60p
No 10Bit Color
No S-Cinetone (Even the latest Sony smartphone has S-Cinetone)
50mm only at f/4, that works out around f/11 on full frame
Body feels cheaper than the Mark I
So hard to see the screen when shooting 4K
