Donald Trump questioned whether Kamala Harris, his Democratic rival, is black during an interview with black journalists.
“Is she Indian or is she black?” Trump, 78, said of his opponent during an appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists’ annual convention in Chicago.
“I respect either one, but she obviously doesn’t because she was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she went, she became black. Somebody should look into that too.”
Ms Harris, a former Attorney General for California, is of mixed race, with a Jamaican father and an Indian mother.
When she was sworn in as vice president in 2021, she made history three times – as the first woman, the first Asian-American and the first black person in the role.
The White House condemned Trump’s comments. Karine Jean Pierre, the press secretary, called them “repulsive” and “insulting”, adding that “no one has any right to tell someone who they are”.
