A patent is a right
A patent is a right granted by the government to inventors. With the patent, you can exclude others from making, using, selling, or importing the patented invention. Three types of patents are granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office: Utility Patents, Design Patents and, Plant Patents. The term for a utility patent and plant patent is 20 years, and 15 years for a design patent. The primary purpose of getting a patent is to stop your competitors from introducing a product that does the same thing as your patented product.
