Bronchiolitis In Babies - What Should You Do? | Channel Mum

Have you heard of bronchiolitis? Would you know what to look out for if your baby or child had it?

If your child is potentially suffering with bronchiolitis, these are the additional signs to look out for:
1. Deep drawing in of the muscles under the rib cage (subcostal recession)
2. In-drawing of the muscles between each rib (intercostal recession)
3. The notch at the top of the breastbone (sternum) is being drawn in (sternal recession) indicating very severe respiratory distress
4. Nostril flaring
5. Wheezing
Call 999 if you witness:
1. Stridor (a high-pitched, wheezing sound caused by disrupted airflow – often associated with upper airway blockage above the vocal cords – not usually Bronchiolitis)
2. Grunting (a very serious sign that needs emergency treatment – dial 999)
3. Apnoea (breathing has stopped)
4. Blue lips or tongue
5. Cyanosis (a bluish cast to the skin and mucous membranes)
6. Your child breathing fast with a respiratory rate of over 60 breaths a minute
