Recycle a mint tin into the perfect gift for your sewing friends. Features a pincushion filled with walnut shells to keep pins sharp and at-the ready. A magnet keeps stray needles in place (free magnets from local businesses work perfectly), while the inside can hold bobbins of thread, snips, and other smaller notions. This little lovely whips up in an afternoon, and can be customized any way you'd like. Betcha can't make just one. Full Material List: • Fabric scraps • Walnut shells • Scrap piece of felt (approximately 5" x 7") • 1/2 yd ribbon or trim • Fabri-Tac Permanent Adhesive • Cardboard (approximately 3" x 5") • Cardstock (approximately 3" x 5") • Scissors • Sewing Machine • Hand needle • Iron (and ironing surface) • Pins (the kind with larger heads work best) • Rotary Cutter • Cutting Mat • Promotional sheet magnet (rip off as much paper as possible) Find supplies used in this project here: nancysnotions.com/ Sewing the Walnut Shell Pincushion Base: 1. Trace the lid of the mint tin onto cardboard. 2. Use cardboard "pattern" to trace and cut two pieces from felt. 3. Stitch about 1/8" around edge, leaving a 2" opening on one long side. 4. Fill tightly with crushed walnut shells (shake each time you add more shells to allow them to settle). 5. Hand-stitch to close with a whipstitch. 6. Glue the walnut shell-filled felt bag to the cardboard "pattern."
