(22 Jan 2022) US-backed Kurdish forces on Saturday brought more reinforcements into north-eastern Syria under the cover of US-led coalition air power in an attempt to regain control of areas taken by militants of the Islamic State group.
Intense clashes have been taking place around Gweiran Prison in the city of Hassakeh after IS fighters on Thursday launched an attempt to overrun the facility where thousands of extremists are being held.
A journalist based in Hassakeh said scores of Kurdish fighters, Humvees and vehicles carrying heavy machine guns arrived in the area on Saturday to boost the anti-IS operations.
Kurdish-led forces who control the prison said inmates rioted and tried to escape while a car bomb went off outside the prison as gunmen clashed with security forces during Thursday's battle.
The attack on the prison was the biggest unleashed by IS militants in Syria since the fall of their "caliphate" three years ago.
More than 100 militants assaulted Gweiran Prison, sparking a battle with Kurdish fighters that has so far left dozens dead.
A spokesperson for the Kurdish-led Self Defense Forces said most of the prison was under their control on Saturday, apart from a small part that is held by rioting prisoners.
He added that fighting was also ongoing in the nearby Zuhour neighbourhood, where IS fighters were holed up.
A German-born SDF fighter, who gave his name as Shahin and  joined the Kurdish forces to help defend Syrians against IS, told the Associated Press the fighting was born from the fact thousands of detained IS members could not return to their home countries.
The Islamic State group was largely defeated in Iraq in 2017, and in Syria in 2019, although it remains active through sleeper cells in many areas.
Militants from the Sunni Muslim extremist group still conduct operations, often targeting security forces, power stations and other infrastructure.
IS attacks have been on the rise in recent months in both Syria and neighbouring Iraq, where the group once set up a self-styled Islamic caliphate before being defeated by an international coalition.
