How to Move off and Stop Safely in the Car
While it's a skill you will learn early on in your lessons, learning how to move off and stop safely is something you will need to perfect in order to pass your test.
But how do you know you're doing it right? This video will run through the stages of moving off and stopping safely to make sure you know exactly how.
Moving off:
After completing the cockpit drill, get the car ready to move:
Depress the clutch
Move into first gear
Lift the clutch to biting point
Apply a minimal amount of pressure on the gas
Next, you'll need to check ahead, in your mirrors and your blind spot before completing your MSPSL routine so that you can be sure that the area around you is clear. If there is a car, pedestrian or cyclist approaching, wait for them to pass before checking again.
Once the way is clear, signal to the right to indicate your intention to others, then release the handbrake and slowly lift the clutch as you apply more pressure on the gas pedal.
Stopping:
Before doing anything, check your interior mirror to check whether there are any vehicles behind you. If there are no cars behind you, slow down whilst you look for a place to park in what is known as a SCALP: a safe, convenient and legal position...specifically, not any of the following: too close to a junction, on or too close to a bend, across a driveway or on double yellow lines.
Once you find a suitable place, check your interior mirror once more, and then your left side mirror to ensure there are no cyclists nearby. It's also a good idea to check your left blind spot too. Whether you indicate or not depends on whether anyone is around; only indicate if someone is around to see it.
While stopping, you need to demonstrate that you can control the car suitably, and that means parking close enough to the curb without scraping or mounting it.
In order to stop, depress the clutch as you roll to a stop, apply the handbrake and then put the car into neutral.
