In this episode, we’ll talk about what the employee life cycle is, why it’s important, and what the different stages of the cycle are, together with a real-life example of what a company could do implementing the concept of the employee life cycle.

So, what exactly is the employee life cycle?

The employee life cycle is the journey that an employee takes with a company, from the time they first hear about the company to the time they leave and potentially even after they leave.
It’s an important concept because it helps organizations to understand and manage their employee better, by identifying the needs and expectations of employees at each stage of the cycle.

The employee life cycle has seven stages, and each stage is important for different reasons.
1. The first stage is attraction, where the company works to build its reputation and attract potential employees.
2. This is followed by the recruitment stage, where the company looks for suitable candidates to fill a position.
3. The third stage is onboarding, where the new employee is introduced to the company and its culture.
4. The fourth stage is development, where the employee is trained and developed to enhance their skills and knowledge.
5. The fifth stage is retention, where the company works to keep the employee engaged and motivated.
6. The sixth stage is separation, where the employee leaves the company either by resignation or termination.
7. And finally, the seventh stage is alumni, where the company maintains a relationship with the former employee.

One company that is well-known for its innovative approach to managing employees is Google.
At Google, the employee life cycle is taken very seriously, and the company has developed a number of programs and initiatives to ensure that employees are engaged, motivated, and happy throughout their time with the company.

For example, during the attraction stage, Google focuses on building its brand and reputation by offering a unique work environment, competitive compensation and benefits packages, and a strong focus on work-life balance. This has helped Google to attract some of the best talent in the industry.

During the recruitment stage, Google uses a rigorous hiring process that includes multiple interviews and assessments to identify the most suitable candidates for each position. The company also places a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusivity in its hiring practices.
Once hired, new employees at Google go through an extensive onboarding process that includes an introduction to the company’s culture, values, and history. They are also given the opportunity to attend training and development programs to enhance their skills and knowledge.

To help employees grow and develop within the company, Google offers a number of career development programs, including mentorship and coaching.

The company also encourages employees to take on new challenges and explore different areas of the company through its “20% time” program, which allows employees to dedicate 20% of their work time to personal projects and initiatives.

To keep employees engaged and motivated, Google places a strong emphasis on employees well-being, offering a range of health and wellness programs, as well as opportunities for community involvement and social activities.

Finally, when employees leave the company, Google maintains a relationship with them throughout its alumni network, which provides former employees with access to company events, networking opportunities, and other resources.

By focusing on each stage of the employee life cycle, Google has been able to create a work environment that attracts and retains top talent, fosters innovation and creativity, and ultimately contributes to the company’s overall success.

So, now that you know what the employee life cycle is and why it’s important, how can you apply this knowledge in your own organization? Start by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of your current employee life cycle, and look for areas where you can improve.

By focusing on each stage of the cycle, you can help ensure that your employees are happy, engaged, and motivated, which can lead to improved productivity and overall success for your company.
