Indianapolis Washington High School captured the fifty-ninth annual state basketbal championship tournament just four years after it had won its first state championship.

The championship game between Indianapolis Washington and Gary Tolleston was a game in which Indianapolis Washington built up a substantial lead and then Gary Tolleston fought back with a tremendous drive that narrowed the margin to a mere three points.

At the end of the first quarter Indianapolis Washington led 18-14. At half time the score was 39-27. Early in the third quarter Indianapolis Washington built up a commanding lead of 48-30. But at this time Gary Tolleston went to work. At the end of the third stop the score was 53-47. Indianapolis Washington was able to stay ahead of stubborn Gary Tolleston and win the Championship game by the score of 79-76. George McGinnis of Indianapolis Washington scored 35 points and grabbed 27 rebounds.

The first afternoon game was a real thriller. Marion pretty well dominated the game for three quarters and then in the fourth quarter it was all Indianapolis Washington. Marion led at the first quarter 18-13, at the half 31-29 and 52-42 at the end of the third stop. From this point on Marion was outscored 19-8 and lost to Indianapolis
Washington by a score of 61-60. In this game McGinnis scored 27 points and snared 16 rebounds.

The second game in the afternoon between Gary Tolleston and Vincennes Lincoln started out in nip-and-tuck fashion. Gary Tolleston raced to a quick seven point lead early in the second quarter and Vincennes Lincoln never could recover from this barrage of points. Gary Tolleston led by only one point, 16-15 at the first stop. At the half the score was 36-27 and at the end of the third quarter it was 56-46. By about an even exchange of points in the fourth quarter the score at the end of the game was 77-66. All five starters for Gary Tolleston were in double figures. Turner and Memering scored 27 and 23 points for Vincennes Lincoln respectively.

The Board of Control selected Joe Sutter of Marion High School as the recipient of the coveted Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude.

An unparalleled feature of this tournament was the fact that Indianapolis Washington (29-0) , Marion (27-0), Vincennes Lincoln (27-0) were undefeated and Gary Tolleston (27-1) had lost one game. This accounted for 110 wins against only one loss.

Consolidation again reduced the number of high schools that participated in the sectional tournaments. This year 463 schools participated compared to 488 last year.
