Tech Council of Australia Chief Executive Kate Pounder says the Labor government’s new migration strategy has “levelled the playing field” so Australia can compete for “critical talent” as they face a “deep skills shortage” in some sectors.

The Albanese government has announced a new visa system which aims to grant visas in seven days to highly skilled workers in areas with worker shortages, cracking down on the use of student visas as a back door entry for employers looking to import low-skilled workers.

This change comes amid growing public concern about the record rate of arrivals, which hit 510,000 last year as students and other travellers returned after OCVID lockdowns.

“We welcome it because we know there are some areas of our economy we have deep skills shortages, particularly when it comes to experienced workers with highly technical skills,” Ms Pounder told Sky News Australia.

“If we want to attract the best talent in the world, we have to have one of the best offers.

“By creating a new specialist pathway … we have really levelled the playing field globally so Australia can now compete with the rest of the world for that critical talent.”
