An ethnic minority armed group in Myanmar has seized control of a lucrative border crossing to China, in the latest escalation in a massive offensive against the Southeast Asian nation’s ruling junta.

Fierce fighting began in Myanmar’s northern Shan state on October 27 after an alliance of three ethnic minority groups launched a surprise operation against the military.

The offensive, known as “1027” has since triggered a wave of armed resistance across the strife-ridden nation, sweeping from the Indian to the Thai border areas, and confronting the military with the biggest threat to its power since it staged a coup in February 20201.

In the latest attack on the junta, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) - one of the three allied groups – captured the Kyin San Kyawt border gate, reported AFP, citing a local media outlet and security source.
