This is the recording of the second webinar on Gearbox Modeling using Simerics-MP+ on the Webinar Series 2024. This video is divided into 3 parts. The first part goes through the introduction of Simerics, the features of Simerics application like capability of handling moving domains and model leakages in the order of microns. Simerics proprietary Binary Tree meshing algorithm automated meshing capability is discussed. The availibility of templates for various applications makes this application easy to use and users can learn the tool with a short learning curve. Details on the Simerics suite of applications like Simerics Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tool and Simerics OPT or Optimizer which is used in conjuction with CFD and optimization are covered. We talk about the OEM partner products like AutoDesk Fusion, Creo Flow, Orca3D, GT-Suite, Rhino Flow-RT, Simscale, Simerics for NX which use the Simerics solver. This is followed by the different templates like pump templates, valve templates, automotive templates, marine templates and compressor templates. We also touch upon the highlights of the General Gear template like handling any number of gears, both internal and external type of gears. The General Gear template's specialty of capturing gear intermeshing with the clearance gap in the order of microns is covered. The General Gear template while modeling helical gears automatically detects the helical angles. In the second part, we go through a demo process, where a Planetary Gearbox is setup using Simerics-MP+. This demonstration shows the ease of a model setup inside Simerics. The agility of the General Gear template in creating and automating the workflow. The results of the simulation are analyzed to show the wetting fraction of the gears and power factor on each of the gears. The third part of the video discusses the engineering benefits of Simerics through three case studies. The first case study revolves around the benefits of intermeshing mesh and overlap mesh. The second case study talks about the FZG Gear and Polly Gear Spinloss where experiment results are compared with the simulation data. To give a taste of the extent to which our gear/bearing capability can be pushed, we show the case study in the recent SAE paper where a planetary gear set (6 gears) is modeled along with 11 bearing sets (each consisting of number of rollers) to understand the lubrication flow to the needle bearings. Simerics-MP+ software is a general purpose CFD tool widely utilized in hydraulic and automotive sectors for virtual simulation and analysis. It can predict transient physics in electric motors, engines, battery packs, pumps, valves, to name a few.
