The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five species in the genus Panthera, a member of the Felidae. The leopard occurs in a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
Contemporary records suggest that the leopard occurs in only 25% of its historical global range.
In 2017, the Cat Classification Task Force of the Cat Specialist Group recognized the following eight subspecies as valid taxa.

1- African Leopard (Panthera pardus pardus)
Status: Overall Least Concern (several populations endangered)
2- Indian Leopard (Panthera pardus fusca)
Status: Vulnerable
3- Javan Leopard (Panthera pardus melas)
Status: Endangered.
4- Arabian Leopard (Panthera pardus nimr)
Status: Critically Endangered.
5- Persian Leopard (Panthera pardus tulliana)
syn. P. p. ciscaucasica and P. p. saxicolor)
Status: Endangered
6- Amur Leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis)
Status: Critically Endangered
7- Indochinese Leopard (Panthera pardus delacouri)
Status: Critically Endangered
8- Sri Lankan Leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya)
Status: Vulnerable.
