In this video I'm in Filetto, an Italian town in the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo and precisely at the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Libera. The name of the municipality could be derived from the term "Filacterion" or "Fulacterion", with which the Byzantines indicated the fortifications placed as a barrier to strategic points of great importance, clearly indicating their origin in time and structural characteristics. In this regard, it should be noted that the denomination of other Italian localities and municipalities such as Filattiera and Filettino probably has the same Byzantine origin. Filetto is also the name of a medieval walled village in the municipality of Villafranca in Lunigiana, on the border with the municipality of Filattiera. The sanctuary church of the Madonna della Libera is located outside the town of Filetto, below the road level of the road which, south of the town, leads towards Guardiagrele. It was built between 1865 and 1875, initially as a hermitage, on the initiative of Fra Vincenzo (alias Lorenzo Liberato) in memory of the apparition of the Madonna to the passing French troops in 1799. In 1952 the floors, altars and internal decorations were renovated. The facade in exposed brick masonry and polychrome plaster architectural elements is in the neo-16th century style and decorated by two orders of paired pilasters with a Doric frieze and concluded by a triangular tympanum with curvilinear connections on the side wings. In axis opens the portal with a semicircular tympanum and gable above with decorated majolica cup and cupids. It develops inside with a three nave plan with a semicircular apse. The church is covered with a barrel vault with lunettes over the central nave, ribbed vaults over the side aisles, with a spherical cap on pendentives and a ribbed vault over the presbytery and ends with an apsidal half-basin. The external covering is a double staggered pitch with a tiled mantle. The internal decoration is essentially in the neoclassical style with an order of fluted Ionic pilasters superimposed on the pillars of the naves with a meander frieze and decorations in stucco and gilding widespread in the apse and in the choir; paintings in the barrel vaults in the cap of the central nave.
The bell tower, of classical shapes, has a square plan and ends in a pinnacle with a ball and cross above. The belfry houses 8 bells of which the 5 large ones face the windows and are electrified with momentum with the motorized blocks of the Brevetti Giannattasio. The 3 fixed minor bells are inside the belfry. In the video we see the solemn ringing performed on the day of the Feast of the Madonna della Libera (November 21, 2022) and the ringing of the 5 major bells for the Holy Mass. The decision to ring the 5 bells is due to the fact that only one Mass is celebrated in the Sanctuary a week.
