Click below to check the trivia question Before becoming a mainstream figure on film in America, Vivien was a promising Shakespearean performer in England. Though the actress was born in India, she had been raised predominantly in England since the age of six. She had taken to performing at an early age and had dedicated her studies to the pursuit of her craft. As a practicing performer, Vivien eventually crossed paths with fellow thespian Laurence Olivier. Although Vivien and Laurence were married at the time that they meant, they couldn’t help but fall in love with each other. They became almost immediately engaged in an extramarital affair and simultaneously became engaged in an equally serious professional partnership. Despite her success in London theater productions, few American filmgoers knew who Vivien was before she was cast in Gone with the Wind. After the film’s success, she and Laurence divorced their respective spouses and finally married each other. While this might have seemed like a fairy tale ending, some new problems began arising that put a damper on the marriage. These problems came in the form of the manic depression and bipolar disorder that Vivien had recently begun struggling from. Vivien suffered from mental struggles through the 1940s before being cast in the London production of A Streetcar Named Desire. Her performance in the production was so great that it landed her the role in the subsequent film adaptation alongside Marlon Brando. However, this second round of success wasn’t enough to keep Vivien from falling further down her mental spiral. Join Facts Verse as we explore the tragic affair and illness that killed Vivien Leigh.
