Do you want to venture into 2024 with a deeper awareness and appreciation for your body? Join Megan MacCarthy LIVE on YouTube for 10 days to learn an accessible and playful form of body based therapy. Somatic Yoga combines the healing facets of somatic movement and yoga therapy.

"Soma" is the Greek word meaning "living body". The somatic viewpoint is that as humans, you are self-aware, self-sensing and self-moving; and therefore self responsible somas who can change yourself from the inside out. Somatic Yoga is a friendly way to reduce pain and tension and bring freedom to the body. In addition to physical and mental well-being, Somatic Yoga works with prana (life force) to benefit the energy body. Your body speaks through sensation; wherever your awareness goes, energy flows. You are simply asked to listen to the sensations created in the gentle movements while offering yourself kindness.

How do you benefit from Somatic Yoga? Think of the term "muscle memory". Despite what the term implies, muscles have no memory of their own—they are controlled by the nervous system. The nervous system likes to be as efficient as possible because making fast decisions helps you survive. When you keep repeating the same motion or position, your nervous system makes that movement or posture automatic. As muscular patterns become more deeply learned, the control and memory of the pattern shifts to areas of the brain that are involuntary (we check out 😪). The good new is the brain is making space to focus on new things that require attention. The bad news: repetitive motions, habitual muscle strain, injury, trauma and emotional tension can all create "muscle memory" problems. Your brain and muscles aren't communicating well; a sensory-motor problem.  Not only do you lose control of movement and posture, but you can't feel that the muscles aren't working efficiently. Are the muscles not working (weak, underused and inefficient) or overworked (inhibited, tight and painful)?

Hold out hope! The natural resting space of your body is to be free of pain. Your brain moves the body, and the brain can be re-educated. In order to resolve muscular pain, you have to involve your brain.
