This video contains:

👉 Candlelit Infinity Mirror: parallel partially mirrored panes of glass create the illusion of multiple candle flames through the physics of reflection and refraction.

👉 Magnetic Stirrer Vortex: whirlpool powered by a magnetic stirrer (like those in a chemistry lab).
vortices are just so cool.

👉 Mirror Anamorphosis

👉 Spring/Latch Polymagnets: this pair of coded magnets attract but don’t touch in a state of stable equilibrium at a distance of 1/2 cm- but if one magnet is turned a half twist they latch together. Magnetic viewing film reveals the specific and complex arrangement of N and S poles that allow for this set to act like a spring or a latch.

👉 Liquid Crystal Window: thermotropic liquid crystals go from opaque to transparent during a phase change from a crystal to liquid state. Here a portrait of a Blue Buddha is revealed by the warmth of the hands.

👉 Pendumonium: Stick man chaotic pendulum with 4 degrees of freedom. Desk toy from the 80's demonstrates chaotic motion of nonlinear systems. Note how the kinetic energy transfers from one limb to another.

👉 Story Scope: mirror anamorphic art- the distorted images on the cylinder are reconstituted within the reflection off the parabolic mirror.

👉 Handheld Van de Graaf Generator: this $20 electrostatic generator can reach 60,000 volts of static charge. Sold as the "Fun Fly Stick" this device uses two AA batteries to run a small motor that drives a charge collecting belt which is visible through the transparent plastic of the device.

👉 50|50 Cube: custom 1 Newton SI unit version.  This precision machined block is comprised of equal 101.97g masses (each block weighing exactly 1N on Earth) of the metals tungsten (W) and magnesium (Mg)- however the volume of magnesium is 11 times that of the very dense tungsten! One must hold and manipulate this simple sculpture for greatest impact. W: 19.25g/cm3 Mg: 1.74g/cm3

👉 Static Spheres: triboelectric effect toy. The red acetate spheres are given an acquired net negative charge, and their mutual repulsion allows them to jump a centimeter or more as charge is manipulated on the PET plastic container. Bringing an object near the container momentarily moves electrons (charge) around creating repulsive forces (sphere v. sphere) and attractive forces (spheres and container) resulting in the observed motions. The red spheres interact with each other without coming into physical contact (as shown in 240 fps slow motion) as like charges repel.

👉 Hyperbola Clock: a straight rod glides through a curved hole in this unconventional clock based on the hyperboloid, the 3D ruled surface traced by rotating diagonal line.

👉 2016 Transit of Mercury: remembering the last time something got in front of the sun! The tiny silhouette of the innermost planet Mercury seen against the disc of the Sun. The magnified image is projected using a 4 inch reflecting telescope outfitted with a repurposed lens from an old 35mm slide projector. Note the presence of a small Sun spot which is much larger than Mercury! Transits of Mercury happen about 13 times a century- the next two will happen in 2019 and then not again until 2032. This telescope was constructed by my father in 1957 and has seen a few transits. A favorite "physics toy"
