Breakfast tacos are an Austin classic. A flour tortilla filled with eggs and beans, cheese, bacon, sausage or vegetables is one of the defining dishes of Texas’ capital city. At Juan in a Million, a Tex-Mex restaurant on the East Side that serves a signature Don Juan taco, size sets the restaurant's apart. What started as a normal amount of bacon, eggs, potatoes and cheese on a tortilla has expanded to a gut-busting taco the size of a small frisbee. Owner Juan Meza invented the Don Juan Taco when a customer asked for something new, and the menu item has grown in popularity since. Some customers order and eat multiple Don Juan tacos as part of an ongoing challenge to see which man and woman can eat the most. Juan in a Million specializes in Tex-Mex, which is a constantly evolving blend of regional Texan and traditional Mexican food. The cooks use American cheeses, like Monterrey, instead of the typical Mexican cheeses, like queso fresco.
