This Rule Review segment is reviewing plays involving traveling, specifically the spin move. This video is dedicated to educating basketball officials on understanding what signals to use and what signals to avoid. Watching actual videos of plays involving traveling spin moves, along with some basic instruction explaining what a spin move looks like and how to identify the pivot foot, helps officials learn faster and retain information better. We can all learn together by continually discussing the rules as they are written in the NFHS rules book and viewing actual high school basketball games reinforces that learning.

Because the spin move is a specific traveling move that has been emphasized as a point of emphasis for the NFHS for the 2021/2022 basketball season it important we all try to get on the same page with a proper understanding of what is required to correctly identify when a traveling spin move is legal or a violation.  Being able to identify when the pivot foot is established and if/when that pivot foot is lifted and returned to the floor is essential to ruling on this difficult play properly. This will be the focus our Rule Review segment. All video clips we reference in this segment on screens come from high school games and focus solely on the NFHS high school rules book.

Video #1
-   A post player grabs the ball and makes a great spin move around his defender for an easy two points. But was it a legal move? Watch to see the breakdown in this first video.
Video #2
- A player drives into the lane and then spins around his opponent and shoots for 2 point.  The officials waves the basket off and rules this move a traveling violation.  Was the officials correct? Find out in the second video breakdown.
Video #3
-  Another drive down the lane with another spin around a defender which finishes with a lay up at the basket.  Can you identify if this move was legal or illegal yet?
Video #4
- One last video with one last spin move, but this time it's different.  Why is this spin legal when all the others that look just like it were traveling violations?  Watch to find out.

Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but true education and learning can more effectively be attained when each video is annotated with diagrams and shading to point out key teaching points.

The Officials Institute, and the Rule Review segment, creates videos that don't leave you guessing about whether there was a foul, violation or not. Even though we cannot officiate in slow motion or freeze frames, by watching and reviewing video video in this fashion, we are able to "retrain our brain" so we can start seeing plays more accurately when we do see them in real time and increase our ability to get the call right.
