Appeared in over 450 films and recorded over 1500 songs, Freddie Silva was the most popular comedian of Sri Lanka between 1960 and 2001, and one of the finest yodellers (a singer who could change register rapidly) of Sri Lanka.

Born Halpeliyanage Athukorala Morris Joseph Ranabahu, Freddie Silva as whom  we know him on stage, is the son of  Halpe Liyanage Wilfred Adolphus Ranabaahu from Matara, and Latishiya Muriel Fernando of Moratuwa. After the marriage of his parents, the family settled down in Moratuwa.
 
Freddie's first recording was 'Bar Bar Bar Eken Beela' composed by Alanson Mendis, which was also the first ever Rock n' Roll song recorded in Sri Lanka in 1958, by courtsey of the late prime minister Sir John Kotalawala. Success of this song was followed by a string of hits such as, Mottapala, Pankiriththa, Aron Maamaa, Parana Coat and Kekille Rajjuruwo, etc.

Freddie started his successful film career in 1962 and went on to act until 2001, with a string of successful films,  being the only Sri Lankan actor who has acted in the most number of films, to date. Most of the films that he acted in were major hits, and to name a few would be..Anjaana, Cherrio Doctor, Nawa Gilunath Baan Chuun, Ara Zoysa, Raj Weda Kaaroyo, Deadunnen Samanaliyak, and the list goes on.. He also produced two films, " okkoma kanapita" and " okkoma hondatai".

Freddie married Kamala Swarnalatha Perera in 1961 and had two children by the names of Janesh (who sadly passed away in 2012) educated at Carey College Colombo, and has one daughter, Chandani, Educated at Methodist College, Colombo.

During retirement, Freddie spent most of his time with his son and daughter. After a brief period of illness, Freddie passed away in October 2002.
