It's January, 1444. John Hunyadi had just returned from his successful campaign against the Ottomans, and begins planning for a crusade. The Karamanid rebellion is still going on, so it is believed that a simultaneous attack by Hunyadi and Vladislaus, and a naval blockade of the Dardanelles might just be enough. But Murad II outmaneuvers Hunyadi on the diplomatic front, alienating such important allies as George Brankovic or Skanderbeg. The Crusade of Varna of 1444 gets off to a bad start. Even though he is outnumbered 2 to 1 at the Battle of Varna, Hunyadi almost achieves victory; but then Vladislaus the 20 year old king does something very foolish, and the battle is lost.
