Sydney rail line 'making drivers sick'

Railcorp is investigating complaints that the lights in Sydney's new underground Epping-to-Chatswood rail line have given train drivers headaches, dizziness and nausea.

A driver on the line was taken to hospital in April with nausea and headaches, which he says were caused by the lights in the tunnel.

Railcorp says it has mandated breaks for drivers after every two return trips on the 12.5-kilometre line and has not had any complaints since.

Its chief executive, Andy Byford, says there is no medical evidence to support the complaints at this stage.

"We are talking to medical people, we're also talking to technical experts to find out if indeed the intensity of the lights and the frequency of the lights can cause these problems," he said.

"For me, safety will always come first so that's the reason I've restricted the number of runs. Since we've shortened the shifts, not a single problem has been encountered."

Opposition transport spokeswoman Gladys Berejiklian says Railcorp's efforts are not good enough.

"The problem's been identified and the State Government's failing to act," she said.

Ms Berejiklian says any problem with the tunnel lights should have been picked up before the line opened in February.

"It's a major concern: yet another debacle in relation to the Chatswood-Epping rail line," she said.

"The State Government should never allow driver safety and commuter safety to be compromised in this way. It demonstrates how absolutely incompetent they are in managing public transport projects."

Mr Byford says the $2.3 billion rail link was designed in line with Australian standards.

The line was originally supposed to run between Chatswood and Parramatta and begin operation in 2006, but the construction phase was dogged by problems and a $900 million cost blowout.

The problems included that the line was too steep for some trains to use and it had unacceptably high noise levels.

Railcorp says the breaks for drivers will not inconvenience commuters.
