Authorities in Thailand have launched a tsunami warning system in a bid to prevent a recurrence of the deadly 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed thousands of people.
The system is comprised of three tsunami-detection buoys located in the Andaman Sea and 136 warning towers along the coast. When an abnormal tidal waves occurs, sensors on the ocean bed detect a change in pressure and send a signal via a buoy and satellite to the National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC). Once the information is confirmed, the centre calculates an expected arrival time within two minutes, before sending out warnings via satellite and warning towers to fax machines, hotlines, radio stations, television stations and to the public. The center will also send messages to 15,000 public officials.
