A description and tips of some fundamentals to building a long lasting garden gate.
A few take aways:
-Posts: 4x6 or 6x6 using a decay resistant material set in a good size concrete pier (12"x30" min)
-Framing: Always frame your gate with the strongest dimension vertical. 2x4s should be placed vertically, not horizontally in a box.
-Hardware: Use good quality fasteners, structural screws such as Timberlock work well. Don't skimp on hinges, a heavy gate will require 3 hinges. Use nails to attach boards to the gate, screws while easy don't look or perform as well. Always use fasteners that are rated for outdoor use.
-Don't make it too heavy. A heavy gate will sag, a garden gate should be 2 ply only, unless you increase the bearing capacity of your posts and hinges.
-Leave a gap: Your gate will expand and contract with the seasons. Leave 3/8-5/8" gap between the gate and post. This can be finished with a trim board.
